Heal! Veterans and Their Service Dogs

“I didn’t want to admit that I had PTSD. I knew there was something wrong. I knew I probably had it. I was like, ‘No, I can deal with this by myself.’ PTSD can destroy your family. They say, ‘You’re not the only one suffering from PTSD, the family is too.’ That’s more true than anything and I want my marriage to work. Thanks to my battle buddy Don, I got introduced to Operation Freedom Paws. Mary [Cortani] got me Annie. She is a wonderful dog. She’s hyper when she needs to be and she’s calm when she needs to be calm. When she feels me being nervous because someone’s getting too close, she gets between me and that person.

“At OFP everyone has a service dog, everyone has an issue. To me, everyone there is normal and accepts me for me. OFP is a godsend.”
